Congratulationto Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland for their creative genius behind the “IronLady” and for their win in the Best Make-up category at the 84^th AcademyAwards! Dick Smith was also inattendance on Sunday night, in order to celebrate his Honorary Academy Award. The award recognized his lifetime ofmakeup accomplishments as well as his unselfish gift of knowledge to theindustry. Oprah Winfrey and James Earl Jones were also awarded Honorary Oscars this year.

CinemaMakeup School staff, graduates and instructors attended the Makeup Artists andHairstylists Symposium on Saturday, February 25^th, at the SamuelGoldwyn Theater to celebrate the work of Oscar nominees in the Makeup category. Emceed by Governor of the Makeup Branch ofthe Academy (and retired Director of Education of CMS) Leonard Engelman,nominees appeared in person and described their makeup secrets and discussedworking in their respective films. EvenOscar winners Meryl Streep and Glenn Close made surprise visits to show theirsupport to the nominated makeup artists and hair stylists!

Another Amazing Challenge On This Week's Episode of SyFy's FaceOff

Every week we love tuning in to see the creativity and skill displayed by the artists on the Syfy Channel's FaceOff, and this week's "Triple Threat" episode did not disappoint. Tara Lang had a lot of work ahead of her this week but she took it like a champ! The challenge this week was to create old age makeups on a set of twins, aging one to the age of 75 and one to 100. They were to look and feel like the same person, physically and personality-wise. But then the contestants were surprised with a twist! Instead of doing two old age makeups, out came another model for each team. Instead of twins, they were now creating old age makeup on triplets!

Each artist worked on one makeup, allowing the judges to evaluate each individual's contribution to the overall group product. Tara took on creating the 75 year old while her teammates Matt and Sue took on the 50 year old and 100 year old, respectively. Sue ended up winning the challenge with her makeup but it was a victory for the whole team.

There was also a special guest judge this week judging the spotlight challenge. Greg Cannom, Academy award-winner for his work on "Benjamin Button." If anyone knows old age makeup, it's this guy.

CMS students got a special treat this week when Tara came in to classes Wednesday morning and invited them out to a FaceOff watching party at the Blue Boar Pub in Hollywood. It's great to see multiple generations of CMS getting together to support each other in their work! Be sure to check back with us about future FaceOff watch parties and other events!

CMS Takes London by Storm: IMATS 2012

Last week Cinema Makeup School flew across the pond to attend the International Makeup Artists Trade Show (IMATS) in London. Director of Admissions Lee Joyner and instructor Carlton Coleman lead the CMS booth which handed out information about the school and hosted two live Special FX makeup demonstrations and creature maquette sculpting. They were assisted in their work by CMS graduates Dave Felstead, Jodi Marie Spencer and Alexandra Myta.

The event, held in the Great Hall of the Alexandra Palace in North London, was a huge success, despite a surprise snowstorm Saturday night which organizers feared would keep attendees away. There were exhibits from makeup artists, brands representatives, and schools throughout the weekend as well as keynote addresses from industry professionals and the annual student competition. Exhibitors came from all over Europe, the US and beyond to participate in this exciting show!

The CMS booth featured a Special FX makeup demonstration by Carlton Coleman and a creature maquette sculpture demonstration by Lee Joyner on both days.

The crowds braved some heavy snow to make it out for the event.

The exhibitions included a special look into the Oscar-nominated makeup of Nick Dudman from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Pictures here are some of his goblin prosthetics and wigs from the film.

Leonard Engleman, the Governor of the Makeup Board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the retired Director of Education at Cinema Makeup School, stopped by the booth to help promote our school and take a close-up look at the demos.

K-2 Japanese Seminar

Last week Cinema Makeup School hosted 63 students from the KTWO beauty schools in Osaka and Nagoya, Japan. The students were given a tour of the facility and then got to see a demonstration on Special FX and character makeup led by two of our instructors, Kevin Brennan and Carlton Coleman. Here are some pictures of the event:

Kevin and Carlton led simultaneous demos for the visiting students. Kevin applied a silicone blister piece, while Carlton built up a burn using gelatin.

It was a packed house!

Lee Joyner led discussion of the demo while one of our Japanese graduates, Nonomari, provided translation.

There were plenty of opportunities for students to take pictures of the prosthetic creations.

After the demo the students had the chance to get up close to see what the makeup really felt like!

The Ve Neill Legends of Makeup Scholarship. We want YOU!

There are only a few months left to apply for the Ve Neill Legends of Makeup Scholarship to study here at CMS!! Final applications need to be received by April 30, 2012, so it's never too soon to get started on your application!

The winner of the Legends of Makeup Scholarship will receive a $10,000 award which can be applied toward any program offered here at Cinema Makeup School. In addition to the scholarship, they will also receive press attention and have the chance to represent CMS at events such as IMATS. Here is a glimpse into some of the publicity last year's winner, Wayne Anderson, has received since being announced as the 2011 Legends of Makeup Scholarship recipient.

Congratulations Tara and Miranda on Another Amazing Week of Faceoff!!!!

Cinema Makeup School graduates Tara Lang and Miranda Jory had another fantastic week on the SyFy show FaceOff. This week's challenge was to design a look inspired by a sea creature the artists found at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach! The twist: their models would be completely submerged in water!!

Tara, along with her partner, Matt (Who was named the overall winner), won the challenge with their gorgeous look inspired by the lyretail fairy basslet!! Miranda also did a beautiful job on her leafy sea dragon creation. Congratulations to them both, we're so proud to have them representing CMS!!

This week I graduated from the High Fashion Makeup Program at Cinema Makeup School!!! My final fashion shoot went so well. If you take the High Fashion program the school sets up a photoshoot for you where they bring in models and hire a professional photographer. My photoshoot took place last weekend and I loved every minute of it. I had an amazing experience at Cinema Makeup School. I met so many great people along the way, and in my short time here at CMS I have already worked on a pilot, two music videos, and a film. I'm going to miss everyone (international students included!) We had so many great laughs, and it's cool that now I have friends all over the world. I just have a couple of weeks of interning at CMS left and I'm going to miss the staff too, I appreciate everything that I gained from this great experience and also appreciate all the connections I made while being at CMS.

My final photo shoot was such a rewarding experience. I'll have to wait 2 weeks for the photographer to give me the final edited images, but I took a few on my own camera and I can't think of a better way to finish my last post.

Cinema Makeup School's Ve Neill Signature Seminar Was a Smashing Success!

On December 11, Cinema Makeup School held an open house tointroduce their new space to the makeup industry. They hosted 3-time AcademyAward winning makeup artist Ve Neill in an exciting and unique special effectsmakeup demonstration. The design was created by CMS Graduate Ian Lome and carefullyselected by CMS faculty members from a wide range of entries for itscreativity, technical difficulty and originality.

Neill worked side-by-side with Cinema Makeup School graduates to apply a silicone gel-filled appliance of their creation. She gave a fabulousdemonstration, and spoke about her success in the industry. Cinema MakeupSchool graduates were involved with every part of the process, including designing,sculpting, molding, applying, and costume creation. Cinema Makeup School usedthis as an opportunity to showcase the talent of Ms. Neill, as well as itsgraduates. A Q&A session with Ve Neill followed the demonstration.

This was the first event we have had in our new space, and we are so pleased with how well it turned out. We'd like to thank everyone who participated, and share some pictures with those of you who couldn't make it.

150 People attended the event. We had to clear out one of our big classrooms, and had a separate room with a live feed of the demo on an HD TV for those who wanted to watch up close. The audience was made up of industry professionals, 706 members, graduates, and current students.

It was amazing to watch Ve Neill work. She was a great guest and had so many helpful tips about making it in the industry.

The makeup was created by a team of graduates, led by Ian Lome, with Miyo Nakamura and Miranda Jory, along with grad Christine Thompson as model and lab assist, with Director of Admissions Lee Joyner coordinating the project. Special thanks to current students and graduates who assisted with bringing this project to life! Thank you guys again for all your hard work!

The first week of the Hairstyling Course focuses on learning popular new techniques and classic period styles. It includes everything from the 1920s to modern styles. One favorite of mine was the 1950's pinup look. Always a classic. My final fashion shoot is next Saturday. I'm so excited! I can't wait until the day of the shoot. Only two more weeks until my last day at Cinema Makeup School. I met so many great people. Every instructor is amazing and I learn so much. The knowledge I gain from CMS is a great step on my path to being a great artist. Thank you to CMS.

Another fun part of working at CMS is getting to see all of the side projects that take place at the school. This week two graduates used the space to create a life cast for one of the actors from My Big Fat Greek Wedding - never a dull moment here.

Ewa and Julian are also interns here at the school.

Through all of this we also managed to have a blood demonstration and a group of makeup artists visit from Japan! This week was very busy. I love getting to see the variety in types of makeup. While I am taking the high fashion class in the evening, the daytime students are learning about blood tubing, bladders, and special effects application.

During the two weeks of High Fashion Class my instructor taught us the skills essential to creating a look for editorial advertising. This week was especially geared towards how to become a freelance photographic makeup artist. My journey at CMS has been incredible. I'm learning so much and my skills are improving each day.

Next week is Photographic Hairstyling where we learn basic and modern hairstyles. After learning all about styling I will feel comforable working hair in with my look when I take freelance makeup jobs. Everything together becomes my whole work of art. I am so excited to share my experience with you next week!

CMS Graduates Chosen for SyFy's hit FaceOff!!

Cinema Makeup School is excited to announce that two of ourgraduates – Tara Lang and Miranda Jory - have been selected as contestants forSeason 2 of Syfy’s hit show FaceOff!

Tara Lang graduated from CMS’s Master Makeup program back in2006 and has worked as a makeup artist on 22 independent feature films since. She also has a wide variety of experience in everything from web series, photo shoots and short films to music videos, commercials and SFX labs. Currently Tara isworking on the hit web series Bite Meand a new film called Sorority PartyMassacre. Tara’s areas of expertise cover everything from character tobeauty to prosthetics.

Miranda Jory graduated from CMS in 2010 and has been workingwith us as an intern since. Miranda’s course work at CMSincluded Creature Maquette Sculpture, Special Makeup Effects, ProstheticsMakeup and Digital FX. She has won multiple awards at student competitions in both the US and Canada. Miranda has a wide rangeof expertise, but her work is especially focused in Special FX, prosthetics andbeauty/fantasy work.

Face Off Season 3 Exclusive Casting Call

It is no secret that we are big fans of the Sy Fy channel's hit reality TV show Face Off, but it seems that they are fans of Cinema Makeup School as well! In order to find contestants for their third season of competition, they contacted the school and decided to have an exclusive casting call for CMS students, graduates, and instructors. While we can't tell you if anyone was chosen for the show, we can show you a few pictures from the auditions.

WORK-STUDY DAIRIES: ANDREA MENDOZA PART 4

My second week of airbrushing was interesting. We spent the week learning the steps to create different styles using a net, stencils and our tools for body painting to create a look. This week our instructor asked us to create an avant-garde animal look as well as a seasonal look. Every time I learn a new technique I get very excited to start a new challenge. The instructors encourage us to do research to get the idea of what our designs will become. The hardest was the testing. We take a test after each section, and each instructor has their own way of testing. My test went little crazy because every time you start a project you have to sketch it out before you start. As for me I’m a visual person so used to just grab a photo for research and my idea will come to me. I was not used to sketching it out, and that lost me some points on testing day points. Live and learn. Good lesson to make sure you know what the instructor (or client) wants and be sure it’s done.

As for me, interning at CMS I meet so many students and get to see what they go through on testing day. Some students get overwhelmed because they want their look to come out perfectly. Being an intern is a great experience. I’m learning so much. The school is very helpful, and I even get to help people who want to practice their makeup or need help learning English. It’s very nice to be a part of other students' journey and meet so many great people. Next week is High fashion and I can’t wait. I’m excited to share my experience with you.

In my journey I have experienced more that I could imagine. An instructor asked me if I was interested in doing a pilot and I said of course! I was so excited. If it gets picked up I will be hired with the show to be a part of that team of artists. I was so grateful for that experience. I am so amazed at how being a part of CMS is helping me to get my foot in the door in the industry. With my will power to grow and network I meet great people along my path. I got to see what it takes to be on set, do touch ups or whatever else your talent desires. I was so excited to receive my first call sheet. I never thought I, a wife and mommy of four children, could make it !! It is so exciting how God works. Thank you CMS .

My first week of AirBrushing was so much fun. I loved learning new techniques on applying foundation. The class covers different styles and patterns, and we are having fun exploring.

Dick Smith Named as Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Honoree

Dick Smith, the sponsor of Cinema Makeup School’s first annual Legends of Makeup Scholarship, was elected to receive the Honorary Award by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Honorary Award is given to those who demonstrate "extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy." Dick Smith’s contributions to the field of movie makeup undoubtedly qualify him for this prestigious award. His resume includes legendary films such as “The Exorcist” “Taxi Driver” and “Amadeus,” the last of which earned him an Oscar in 1984. He acquired the moniker “The Godfather of Makeup” after his work on The Godfather films and he has been active in training many of the other phenomenal makeup artists who are currently working in today’s industry.

Other recipients of this year’s awards include James Earl Jones and Oprah Winefry. All three will receive their awards at the Academy’s Annual Governors Awards dinner on Saturday, November 12, at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center.

Cinema Makeup School would like to extend their sincerest congratulations to Mr. Smith and acknowledge the Academy’s honorable selection.

My first month at Cinema Makeup School was everything I could have imagined. I'm so grateful to be a part of CMS. Every instructor is a professional in the industry and it's so amazing to be walking down the halls with great artists, I have learned different techniques, styles and what it takes to be a great artist . Instructors encourage us to be hands on from the beginning stages of our ideas to our final look. My weeks of interning and taking High Fashion in the evening are amazing. I learn Basic Beauty and structure, Film, Television and period beauty makeup. I have met so many great people. Everyone here is so friendly and they take the time to show me all I need to know about the school. They have given me training on how everything runs at CMS, which is great for morale. Being a student and intern at CMS opens great opportunities for me. I was honored to attend the Face Off Season 2 Finale party. I was filmed walking the red carpet and was an extra for the show, the whole experience was amazing. Seeing what it takes to be a part of this industry and watching everyone backstage doing what it takes to get the job done.Thank you CMS for this great experience. My husband and I are artists, he's a conceptual artist and I'm a makeup artist we have four children. We support each other with our talent. When I started this opportunity, my family was so supportive, helping each other with day to day routines. My family is important, and it's always a great feeling to know I have their support, and that they are so proud of me. Can't wait to update you on my upcoming weeks. CMS Graduates and Instructors Nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards

We are proud to announce that three members of the CMS family have been nominated for 2011 Prime Time Emmy’s!

Zena Shteysel, a 2003 CMS graduate, has been the key makeup artist for Dancing With the Stars since 2005 and was nominated in the Outstanding Makeup for a Multi-Camera Series or Special (Non-Prosthetic) category. This is her fifth nomination with the show. She has already won an Emmy for her work on the 2008 season of Dancing with the Stars. Shteysel’s resume since graduating from Cinema Makeup School includes Dancing with the Stars, Gladiator, and the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.

Cinema Makeup School seminar instructor Brad Look has been nominated as an Additional Makeup Artist for his work on How I Met Your Mother. This is his 10th Emmy nomination, with one win already under his belt. Look has graced the seminar halls of Cinema Makeup School with his outstanding body art demonstrations. Look’s extensive resume includes Thor, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, and Star Trek: Voyager. His ongoing contributions to the makeup industry still inspire our staff and students today.

Former CMS airbrush instructor Tyson Fountaine received his first ever Emmy nomination for his help on the Nickelodeon show iCarly. Fountaine’s work has been featured in Rolling Stone Magazine as well as the movies Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Serenity. Fountaine was recently added to the makeup team for So You Think You Can Dance, which is lead by CMS graduate Amy Strozzi.

In the month of September, Cinema Makeup School decided to offer one deserving person the opportunity to take an evening beauty course in our new work-study program. The first of its kind at CMS, offers a student the opportunity to take a course in exchange of working here at the school part-time during the day. Many hopeful prospective students applied, but only one was chosen.

Congratulations to our new work-study intern, Andrea Mendoza. Here is what she had to say about the opportunity:

“My goal for the past five years was to come to Cinema Makeup School. I’m married with four kids and it is not easy to just get up and sign up for school. It’s hard to just drop any amount of money for any school. So when I saw CMS’ Facebook fan page and read the post regarding the high fashion internship/work study program, I got so excited that I jumped out of my chair and ran to the computer to send my resume. I have been praying for an opportunity to come to CMS and well the answer to my prayers came in the form of a Facebook post. Who would’ve thought? Cinema Makeup School has been my dream and I’m grateful that CMS opened up this opportunity for artists that want to fulfill their dream in this industry. I am so proud to help pioneer this great internship/work study program with CMS.

The Cinema Makeup School Museum Opens its Doors

June 1st, 2011 Cinema Makeup School moved into its new space on the second floor of Hollywood’s Wiltern Theater. Since then the staff and students have been enjoying the new space and amenities that the school’s new location offers, and are now proud to announce the opening of their own museum.

The museum is located within a historic and beautiful room in the Wiltern Theater, which was built in 1931, and we are very excited to announce the first of many exhibits that will grace its wood paneled walls. Cinema Makeup School is opening its museum space with an exhibit featuring the work of three Korean Professors from Daegu Haany University. The exhibit showcases unique fashion pieces with an emphasis on texture and design as well as a display of modern men’s neck ties. We hope that this and future exhibitions act as a spark to the inspiration of our students and visitors.

The Exhibit will be running through the month of July and we invite all to come and enjoy the display. Please check back for updates on future exhibitions.

Less than two months ago Wayne Anderson was announced as the recipient of the Cinema Makeup School & Fangoria Magazine’s $10,000.00 Dick Smith Legends of Makeup Scholarship. It already looks like his makeup career is off to a promising start. Before taking in all the IMATS Pasadena festivities, Anderson spent Friday afternoon visiting the Cinema Makeup School with family.

Wayne Anderson had the opportunity to meet some of the makeup greats that were in attendance. Leonard Engelman, Governor of the make-up branch of the Board of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science as well as retired Director of Education at Cinema Makeup School, took him around the pro-lounge and introduced him to some of the makeup industry heavy weights.

While Anderson met many famous make-up artists, a definite highlight was meeting Dick Smith. Dick Smith is not only the Oscar Award winning makeup artist who is known in the industry as "The Godfather" of Special Effects, but also the namesake for the Scholarship that is making Anderson’s makeup education dream a reality.

This past weekend, some of our current CMS students attended the 2nd Annual Star Trek Day at the Frank and Son's Collectible Show. CMS' Eva Buinowski was there to capture all of the excitement of the event.

On Saturday, June 11th, 2011, Cinema Makeup Students Stephanie McBride, Madison Paul, Anielia Thomas, and I had the chance to spend an afternoon at an event that was out of this world! The Frank and Son’s Collectible Show was holding their second annual Star Trek Day in the City of Industry and asked us to offer show goers the chance to transform into space creatures and beyond. It was a great opportunity for us to meet people and promote what we love to do, special effects makeup. Many people were impressed that a school like Cinema existed where you can take your dream of doing makeup and turn it into a tangible career. The staff at the event was amazing and the fans were the best! We brought several appliances, but we ended up taking some of them apart and creating new makeup ideas. The guests were excited about coming up with their own individual looks. Our makeup’s ranged from aliens to zombies to Avatars and even Hell Boy! We were located right across from the guest stars at the event. We had the pleasure of meeting Carel Struychen, who played Lurch in The Addams Family, and Larry Hankin, who played Mr. Heckles on Friends. Overall it was a great atmosphere with enthusiastic Star Trek fans. Can't wait to warp into next year’s meeting!

The Dick Smith Legends of Makeup Scholarship Announcement

The winner of Cinema Makeup School & Fangoria Magazine’s $10,000 Dick Smith Legends of Makeup Scholarship has been selected. This has been a grueling process for our scholarship committee.We have meticulously read through hundreds of applications and found several spectacular artists that made it extremely difficult to choose only one winner. We applaud everyone’s efforts especially these four finalists: Nicole Ordaz, Las Vegas, NV, USA; Katherine Tyryk, Moscow, Russia; Melissa Jimenez Ramirez, Bogota, Colombia; and Ebony Kay, Lilydale, Australia. For these four finalists, we are happy to reward them with Cinema Makeup School’s signature Digital Effects Makeup class.

Without further ado we are thrilled to announce Wayne Anderson from Fort Myers, Florida as the winner of the inaugural 2010 Dick Smith Legends of Makeup Scholarship. All of the pictures in this article are original works of Wayne Anderson. Wayne is a self taught artist that demonstrated consistent effort in his desire to become a professional makeup artist. For years, through trial and error, he has created his own costumes and brought a new sense of innovation to all of his makeup and creature creations. He will be starting class at Cinema Makeup School this summer. Leonard Engelman, Governor of the Makeup Branch on the Board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and chairman of our Scholarship Committee commented on Anderson’s work:

“Wayne Anderson’s artistic ability, his passion for the art of makeup, his drive to learn , progress, and achieve even on his own has brought him to be chosen the winner of this year’s Legend of Makeup Scholarship. I know Dick Smith is very proud”.

The scholarship is an annual award presented by Cinema Makeup School and Fangoria Magazine celebrating the career and craft of legendary makeup artists. This Scholarship has been introduced to identify those newcomers to makeup who are dedicated and motivated by passion of their craft to spearhead the next vanguard of professional makeup artists.

The 2011 Legends of Makeup Scholarship has now been decided. It will be named in honor of Ve Neill. Ve Neill has been nominated for Oscars a total of eight times and has won for Beetlejuice, Mrs. Doubtfire and Ed Wood. Her other nominated films include Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands, Hoff, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At worlds End. See her artistry in the upcoming films Priest and The Amazing Spiderman. She is also a regular makeup competition judge on SyFy’s Face Off.

CMS Alumni Crystal Acuna gives her account of all the action at the Governor's Ball.

I had the amazing opportunity to work on site at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood for the 83rd Governor's Ball which follows the Academy Awards. I, along with fellow CMS alumni Lori Lozano, Nicole Merritt, Lupe Neri, Kristal Pitts, Ruby Gracey, Sherita Garcia, Maria Landoni, Marcela Gonzalez, and Christina Baldemian, were responsible for the hair and makeup for the cocktail waitresses and several female orchestra members that were working at the prestigious event. It was such a great moment in our lives as we were shuttled past street closures, down Hollywood Blvd and to the hotel where we were taken through a couple of high security metal detectors and to our suite where Jessica Andrews along with the staff of Sequoia Productions awaited and instructed us on the look of the evening. We all greeted our talent with smiling faces and began to work all while overlooking the streets of Hollywood that was seamlessly preparing for the evening's events. Once the cocktail waitresses and orchestra members were all done, we were escorted down to have a meal which was catered by Wolfgang Puck...it was so delicious!! Right after dinner, we sat in and listened to children’s choir PS22 as they rehearsed for the show's finale by singing their rendition of "Firework" by Katy Perry. They were fantastic! After such a treat and before Lori Lozano and I touched up the ladies makeup we were all surprised with an invitation to tour the ballroom. It was truly a site to see and was a perfect way to end such a fabulous day.

We were all on cloud nine and I'm sure I can speak for everyone when I say how grateful we are for not only the education but the assistance and motivation that Cinema Makeup School has provided to us all. I can't imagine going to another school and getting the same help. We are very proud grads and look forward to many more opportunities to come!

Cinema Makeup School wowed the crowd again in London! Graduate Gage Hubbard (of SyFy’s Face-Off fame) performed 2 prosthetics in our booth this year. His model, graduate Gehan Mohammed, was the subject of both of his creepy creations. The first, on Saturday, as a foam latex dried up zombie look, complete with hand appliances. The second, applied on Sunday, was a silicone gel filled appliance of a mutant, complete with schoolgirl uniform. The crowd loved the edgy factor of that particular makeup, and many a laugh and gasp were heard during the transformation. Even Neil Gorton was drawn into the booth to congratulate Gage on his show stopping masterpiece.

Director of Admissions Lee Joyner (Godzilla, Mimic) was sculpting in the booth, bringing to life a huge horned demon design, complete with sweeping horns and furious emotion. Assisting in the booth was graduate Vicks Tiplady, speaking with all interested parties about the school, it’s benefits and what to expect while training in Los Angeles.

Graduate Sunny Scarlett was honored to be chosen as CMS’ ambassador of prosthetic mastery, competing in the Character Competition. The theme was Mythology, bringing a wide range of ideas and subject matter to the table. Sunny used her brother as her model, and her mother came from the States as well to lend her support. Sunny came in first, impressing the judges, including Academy Award winning (Narnia series) makeup artist Howard Berger of KNB fame.

A fantastic time was had by all, and yet again CMS stormed the beaches of England with cutting edge makeup, unique instruction and award winning graduates!

Recent Cinema Makeup School graduate Sabrina Wilson gives her accounts of time spent working for Universal Studios Hollywood's Grinchmas 2010. Check her story out after the jump.

After graduating from Cinema Makeup School in November 2010, I worked at Universal Studios Hollywood doing Grinchmas 2010, a Christmas themed event on the original set of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. While still enrolled in the master makeup program I applied for the job after seeing it posted on the CMS Industry Job board. I was fortunate enough to be selected and worked under Patrick Magee at Magee FX. It was 26 straight days of sometimes 12 hour shifts, but I loved every minute of it. I applied and colored prosthetics, accomplished beauty and high fashion makeup looks, touched up existing makeup, and properly removed the makeup at the end of the day. I left Grinchmas sad that it had to come to an end, but grateful for the experience to take what I had learned at Cinema and see it manifest in the creation of the Grinches and Whos of Whoville. I also had the pleasure of working with my CMS classmates including Karla Alves, Aprille Ricafranca, Laura Lieffring, Katie Machaiek, Melissa Acevedo, and Sunny Scarlett.

On the Set: A Day With Joel Harlow By Matthew Sherin

Cinema Makeup School graduate and intern Matthew Sherin gives an account of his experiences working with famous Special FX makeup artist Joel Harlow. See what he had to say about the well known artist after the jump.

As a recent June 2010 graduate of Cinema Makeup School, I have been working as a lab intern for special effects. Last week Joel Harlow visited CMS for a trial run for an upcoming open class event. I was only in charge of the technical side of the event, meeting and helping Joel Harlow set up, but I ended up having the opportunity to assist in the application process. Special effects make-up artist Joel Harlow is best known for his work on the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Alice in Wonderland, Green Lantern, and Inception. The interactive open class that is being rescheduled will feature an old age 12 piece silicone appliance make-up of the “Creepy” comic book character “Uncle Creepy.” For the trial run, the make-up application and removal was very time-consuming. It was a privilege to interact one-on-one with an academy award winning artist. After I tested all the equipment for the upcoming event, I was thrilled to assist him with blending edges and gluing, as well as removing. I was grateful to hear from his assistants that Joel was impressed with my work and how knowledgeable I was of the processes and materials I obtained while attending CMS and while working as an intern. We went back to his studio to drop off the equipment and then I was invited to dinner with Joel and his crew. It was a once in a life-time experience that I wouldn’t have been able to have if I didn’t attend Cinema Makeup School.

CMS works with Miss California and Miss Califronia Teen 2011!

Each year Cinema Makeup School has the opportunity to send students and graduates to assist in the Miss California and Miss California Teen pageant held every autumn. This past weekend, November 21st, 2010, CMS sent over 30 makeup artists and hair stylists to help glam up the Beauty Queens.

Current student Ramon Blanco was one lucky guy when he realized which contestants he had been paired with, "I was able to work with BOTH the Miss and Miss Teen Winners!... It was wonderful."

Students and Graduates loaded up their cars and traveled east to the exclusive Palms Springs area for the big day. The CMS crew had just a few hours to make up 80+ contestants for the main portion of the pageant, and later had to be present for touch ups and hair changes. "The director came and told us how thankful he was for our help... how appreciative he was... that was really nice of him, it was a really great experience." said current student Krystal George of her time there.
All the students agreed that overall it was a great event. "It was well organized and a good working environment." Student Jyll King said, with student Alicia Mizrahi chimming in, "... and the buffet was great too!".

Cinema is always proud to have their students represent such a widely known and well respected organization, and we know there will be many more opportunities to come. Of the experience, Ramon later said, "... to have the entire room filled with current and former CMS students, I would do this again year after year."

Tuesday Corren applies makeup to Jambi!

This past January and early February was a great time for CMS graduates Tuesday Corren (FTV '09) and Marissa Williams (Master '09) as they got to do makeup on the new stage version of The Pee Wee Herman Show @ Club Nokia w/ 3 time Oscar Winner MUA Ve Neill! The two interviewed w/ Ve Neill (Department Head) and Cristina Waltz (Key Makeup Artist) and landed the gig against 14 other MUA's that were up for the job as well. Ve Neill, who worked on the original TV show "Pee Wee's Playhouse," happily created the makeup designs for the show, and left the rest in the hands of our CMS MUA's (along with two other MUA's) to apply makeup on Jambi, Ms. Yvonne, and other characters like Cowboy Curtis, Mailman Mike, Sergio, King of Cartoons, and Fireman Fineous. As of now, the show is being taken on the road to New York City to make it's debut premiere at The Stephen Sondheim Theatre for 6 weeks! Whether Tuesday and Marissa venture to the Big Apple or not, they both agree that their time in LA with the Playhouse gang was nothing but "FUN!!!"

Monsterpalooza 2010

Master Sculptor Lee Joyner explains his sculpting techniques with an interested special effects artist.

Disgusting, disturbing, and dreadful, are nothing but compliments coming from attendees at this years 2nd annual Monsterpalooza event! As the place was packed from wall to wall with monster lovers, creators, and costars of the films they once screamed in, The Marriott Burbank Convention Center was the place to be from April 9th - 11th if you are a fan of everything creepy. While some fans even dressed as their old favorites like Frankenstein, Freddie, and Jason, others played paparazzi to the guest speakers, ( like Barney Burman,The Chiodo Brothers, Howard Berger), monstrous displays of merchandise, and of course clay-tastic creations. Cinema Makeup School was definitely a snap shot hot spot!

With Director of Admissions & Master sculptor Lee Joyner working on a few of his unique creature designs, student Miranda Jory sculpted away on her full body Dragon creature design and Graduate Garret Christensen also kept the clay moving as he created a gangly vulture! The sculpting at the booth seemed to generate a lot of talk and interest in the school as well as the creature maquette class, as even a few big names in the makeup Industry like Jordu Shell, and Ve Neill, came by to check out the students work! Graduates Garret Christensen and Emily Nakasone also participated in Cinema Makeup School's awesome blood demo with MUA Instructor Rallis Kahn. It truly was a gory hit and in the end the convention had great focus on the monsters and the people who made them.

Alice in Wonderland (2010) /Makeup FX

Tim Burton's eagerly anticipated 3-D Version of Alice in Wonderland is now in Theaters everywhere. Starring Jonny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as the evil Red Queen. In order to bring Burton's unique vision to life many bizarre and outrageous makeup designs were needed. Oscar Winner Valli O Reilly took on the task as a Makeup Department Head and was joined by a small army of big name make up artists: Mike Smithson ( Key Prosthetic Makeup), Brad Look and Bill Corso. Both Look and Corso had given lectures at Cinema Makeup School in the past.

Industry News: New Makeup Academy brings in the big guns...

Cinema Makeup School is proud to announce that Leonard Engelman, CMS' Director of Education, has been given the honor to join the "Irish Film and Television Academy, Los Angeles" as a Founding Member. He will be involved in the selection of the nominees for their Makeup Academy Awards, and will be a voting member for all awards as well. A veteran in the Industry, and the first Governor of the Makeup Branch on the Board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, we are sure Leonard will make a great contribution to this Academy and we are happy to have him as a continuous component to Cinema Makeup School.

CMS Graduate Jodie Watts models the Draconian Lady silicone appliance.

Cinema Makeup School made an appearance at the 2010 International Makeup Artist Trade Show this past January. Director of Admissions Lee Joyner was sculpting in the booth, representing our new Creature Maquette Sculpture Class (unique to CMS), and graduate and technical Emmy Award winner Carlton Coleman applied a silicone gel-filled appliance (sculpted and designed by Lee Joyner, lab work by CMS interns Tomo Hayashi and Chris Hernandez). Carlton was showcasing CMS’ cutting edge application instruction in plastic encapsulated platinum gel silicone appliances. Special fx artist and creature designer Amy Ali assisted both Lee and Carlton.

CMS Students and Graduates wow the crowd at Long Beach's International Salon and Spa Expo

This past Sunday, January 31, 2010, CMS students participated in Long Beach’s International Salon and Spa Expo.CMS Instructor Mireille Bertrand and her crew of current students, including Jennifer Quinteros, Lacie Guzman, Lauren Bracco, Tara McKinney, April Koeberle, Katherine Chandler, Adriana Arreguin, Yadira Covarrubias, Jessica Morais, and Veronica Gil Duran provided the makeup and hair for Fusion Tool Company’s grand opening for the ISSE main stage. Since vampire's seem to be the new trend in movies and fashion, Fusion hair designer Lashawndra Harris wanted a vampire theme for her show. Pale skin, red lips and dark eyes were all the rage. Red glitter and sequins were added to further and enhance the makeup and inspire the audience to recreate a more glamorized vampire style. The ISSE's Fashion Theatre was packed as the artists sent their vampy models down the runway. Not only was it a success for Long Beach's biggest hair show, it was a success for Mireille and her passionate crew.

CMS Artist Jordu Schell was featured on 60 Minutes showing some of his sculptures for the blockbuster hit Avatar. Jordu has taught the Digital FX Class here at Cinema and we are excited for his accomplishment with the Avatar Maquettes! In the Digital FX Class Students learn how to apply makeup, correct a photo, and even create a character like the Na'vi in Avatar!
